Trusting my intuition

Recently, on yet another foray into the “self-help books” section of my local Big W, I was intrigued to see that Steve Biddulph had released a new book called “Fully Human, A new way to use your mind”.  As I flicked through the pages I was surprised to see that what Steve was really writing about intuition, he was just calling it something more palatable to the masses.  I mean, we all know that intuition belongs in the ridiculous realm of “not scientific” right?  Yet, here is a widely respected and best selling psychologist and author writing about using intuition to guide our lives.

So what is intuition?  Cambridge dictionary defines intuition as “knowledge from an ability to understand or know something immediately based on your feelings rather than facts”.  I like to think of it as your “inner knowing”, the knowing you have without knowing how you know!  So few of us understand how to use this gift that we all have.  Every person on earth can learn how to tune in to their intuition.  It’s learning to understand it for ourselves and the nuances it applies to our own life that is the tricky part.

It’s also important that we can learn to see the difference between intuition and ego.  While it sounds hard, it’s actually quite easy, once you know how.  Ego, a part of our inner psychology, tries to keep us safe and is seated in protection mode.  When Ego is driving us we feel anxious, stressed and overwhelmed.  Intuition, on the other hand, is based in love.  Intuition is the tingle, the gentle nudge, the quiet whisper.  Intuition gently steers us towards our best self and best life.  Ego is judgemental, loud and argumentative.

So, now that I’ve set the stage, let’s get on to what you really want to know, how I learnt to trust my own intuition, and even more importantly, how to use it to benefit my clients.  For many years I would get hunches and tingles about needing to do something, or not do something, that I wouldn’t pay attention to, and in some cases flat out ignored.  When I did this, it was always because I thought I knew better, I thought I knew what I wanted.  When I first started studying psychology, I was hellbent on becoming a fully registered organisational psychologist, wanting to work in large corporate environments.  Yet, this is not where I have ended up.

As I got older, I realised that when I did pay attention to the niggles and quiet suggestions, things just went more smoothly for me.  I started listening to them more and more.  Every time I ignored my intuition, there was a cost of some sort, often messy and uncomfortable.  The biggest shift for me came after I did an eight week group program on channelling your intuition.  Suddenly I found my intuition was not so quiet, it was far clearer and it guided me time after time.  It was at this point that I realised that my intuition was assisting me when I was working with clients, guiding me to their area of greatest need during sessions.  The more I listened and trusted my intuition, the better results my clients were getting because we could access root issues so much faster.  This allowed our work together to target exactly what needed to be dealt with from very early on in therapy.

For so many clients who go to therapy, there can be many hours of sifting through possible problems.  Learning to trust my intuition with my clients means I save them hours of pointless conversation where we simply rehash awful experiences that aren’t integral to their healing.  We break the major facets down quickly to understand why, then move straight into the zone of repair, change and growth.  Throughout this process, teaching someone to trust their own intuition is the most powerful tool I can give them.  How to use it to understand their past more fully and using it to guide them to the future they are worthy of.

Imagine knowing how to harness your intuition to design a life tailored just for you.  A life that has you feeling powerful and purposeful.  A life with meaning, where your past no longer controls you and the future in firmly in your hands.  No  matter what you feel is holding you back, together we can forge a new path for you to the future of your dreams.  Book now for your free 30 minute call to find out exactly how I can help you get there!
